17 Goals: How to support SDG #2 – Zero Hunger – with your web search
Many of the 30 projects we currently support with the proceeds of our web search GOOD – the search engine for a better world – contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goal “Zero Hunger”. See how you too can make your contribution.
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a roadmap for the future that the global community adopted in 2015. They are addressed to everyone: governments worldwide, but also civil society, the private sector, and academia.
Goal 2 – Zero Hunger
- Ensure adequate food supply
- End malnutrition
- Double agricultural productivity
- Make food production sustainable and resilient
- Preserve genetic diversity
These projects, supported by the GOOD Web Search, contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goal “Zero Hunger”:
Sanku – Project Healthy Children
This is currently our flagship initiative on SDG #2. The social enterprise Sanku from Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania has found a way for local grain mills to fortify the more with essential vitamins and minerals at no extra cost – neither for the mill operators nor for the buyers. This is hugely important because the large international programs that pursue similar goals usually only reach the large urban centers, but not the villages in rural areas.
ShareTheMeal
This award-winning app allows each of us to donate a meal to people in need through the World Health Organisation, doing a good deed with just a few clicks. Cost: 40 cents per meal.
Samaki Aquaponik
With Samaki Aquaponics, students at the University of Aachen are helping people in Uganda to establish sustainable fish farming. This improves the local food situation and protects nature. The whole thing works through a knowledge transfer to aquaponics.
YaBana Global Care
The association YaBana Global Care from Munich has built a fee-free primary school in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The school is financed by an affiliated bakery. The combination of school and bakery not only ensures the daily school meal but also enriches the educational offer.
Save the Grain
This project won the community award of our GOOD Impact Challenge which we conducted jointly with Enactus Germany. With Save the Grain, the students from Cologne help villages in Togo to preserve their food using simple, intelligently designed solar dryers and thus reduce the enormous harvest losses.
Health4Bees
Bee mortality is one of the greatest threats to food security on earth. The start-up Health4Bees at the Impact Factory in Duisburg has developed a completely new method to protect bee colonies. With the help of intelligent sensor technology, environmental data is analyzed, with the bees themselves collect jointly with the pollen and nectar which they bring into the bee hives.
SirPlus
The Berlin-based start-up SirPlus wants to make saving food “mainstream”. Through shops and an online store, it is building sales channels for food that has expired but is still good. In this way, SirPlus is helping to ensure that less food is wasted overall.
Forest Gum
The Cologne-based start-up Forest Gum not only produces healthy, plastic-free chewing gum, but also ensures sustainable management of tropical forests in Central America, from where it sources the chicle, the raw material.
ChillChoc
The Stuttgart-based startup ChillChoc not only sources sustainable cocoa from countries like Sri Lanka or Brazil, but also shares rare knowledge about sustainable soil management in the tropics, thus contributing to sustainable agriculture.
Conflictfood
The Berlin-based start-up Conflictfood sources food from crisis and war zones, helping local people to continue farming even in difficult times.
What can you do to contribute to SDG #2? You can easily integrate these valuable tips into your everyday life:
- Eat vegetarian or vegan food more often to reduce your meat consumption
- Buy only as much as you need to avoid food waste
- Save food, for example with SirPlus or Too Good To Go
… or of course: Use GOOD for your daily search on the web 🙂
