Students from Germany develop sustainable shin guards “made in Zambia” to be marketed through a Buy-1-Sponsor-1 scheme, benefiting African youth soccer teams
Frederik Hornung is a passionate soccer player. When he spent a year with a soccer club in Zambia through the Weltwärts program, he noticed that many children and young people were playing without shin guards and frequently injuring themselves. This gave him the idea of making shin guards from bamboo, a locally abundant raw material.
Back in Germany, he founded the ZamBam Sports project via the Enactus university team at the University of Augsburg. The aim: to develop a social enterprise that produces high-quality shin guards “made in Zambia” through partners and sells them in Europe. The local soccer clubs in Zambia will then also benefit from a buy-1-sponsor-1 model, as their players – equipped with ZamBam Guards – will be able to move more safely on the pitch.
Our goal is to make the world of soccer more sustainable and to provide players with affordable sport gears. Our motto is “Fair soccer for all” – fair for our workers, fair for the environment, fair for the sport

ZamBam Sports shows in an impressive way how it is possible for students to take the initiative and develop new solutions that change the world for the better. With their alternative made from renewable raw materials as well as great added value and social benefits in the manufacturing countries, they show that there are good alternatives to conventional plastic shin guards. They are now looking for active supporters to help them take this step and turn the university project into a self-sustaining company that can also reliably supply large distribution partners. The demand is there.
