HateAid stands up against hate online. The goal: to make the digital space a safe place for everyone.
HateAid was founded on the conviction that respect and tolerance are crucial for our democracy. Hate, violence and disinformation massively restrict the diversity of opinions on the internet – one of our most important spaces for debate. In particular, people who are also discriminated against in other areas of their everyday lives remain silent out of fear of hate or even withdraw completely. HateAid offers affected people not only advice and legal support, but also a voice vis-à-vis platforms and politics in an often powerless digital world.
The successes of the organization, which was only founded at the end of 2018, are impressive and inspiring. Over 5,000 victims have already been supported in their counseling. In 2023 alone, HateAid was able to finance 522 criminal complaints, 117 warning letters and 33 civil lawsuits in court, achieving a success rate of over 90% in court. High-profile cases such as the support provided to climate activist Luisa Neubauer, who was awarded a compensation payment of 6,000 euros in 2021 for sexist and humiliating attacks on Facebook, achieve particular visibility. However, members of the public make up only 5% of clients. HateAid supports all people who do not spread hate themselves.
